Local icon Settlers Tavern has taken out the prestigious award for ‘Best Wine List WA’ and in the Gourmet Traveller Australia’s Wine List of The Year Awards. Settlers also received the award for ‘Best Listing of WA Wines’.

Held in Sydney this week (Monday, 22nd July), the awards are very highly regarded in the hospitality and tourism sectors and winning is considered the holy grail of acknowledgement – assuring local recognition and international exposure.

Karen Gough, Proprietor and Wine Director at Settlers, said ‘Our wine program is really about the quality of our selections. Each wine represents a great story and real people who we genuinely connect with. We work towards sustainability in all aspects of our business and our approach to our wine list truly reflects this.’

Gourmet Traveller Wine commented, ‘The Settlers superstar list continues at pace…Their wine list is a remarkable feat for a regional pub, let alone a restaurant anywhere in Australia. Offering over 600 wines and you’ve seen one of the most legendary living lists in the country. Proprietors Karen and Rob are dedicated to not only supporting their local wine region, Margaret River, but unearthing and fostering new talent, discovering and promoting under-the-radar producers and broadening horizons of patrons.’

Launched in 1993, the ‘Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards’ were created to recognise and reward the hard work and talent of sommeliers, as well as the enormous investment in time and resources by business owners, to develop quality wine lists and cellars.

The judging panel, consisted of a 34 strong group of highly respected local and international judges, includes Master Sommeliers, Masters of Wine, wine judges, educators, commentators and previous award winners. This year saw record entries for the awards.

Awards Consumer Media Partner for the last decade, Judy Sarris, Editor of Gourmet Traveller WINE saluted Australia’s sommeliers. ‘We have watched as, over the years, the best wine lists have evolved magnificently, allowing us to take all manner of vinous adventures. At the same time, these lists give us a fascinating indication of trends among drinkers and winemakers alike. Australian sommeliers can be proud of all they have achieved. Showing both consumer interest and sommelier desire to showcase the beauty of Australian wines, it was pleasing to see the strength of both ‘Best Listing of Australian Wines’ and ‘Best Listing of a Regions Wines’ categories this year.’

Settlers has previously won a swag of Gourmet Traveller Wine Awards, including Hall of Fame for Best Pub Restaurant Wine List, Best Listing of a Region’s Wine 2018, Best Listing of Australian Wines 2015 and the Gourmet Traveller Wine Reader’s Choice Award 2015.
